So you want to blog

So you want to blog.

you want to blogOk, you’ve made the decision – you want to blog. What next?
How do you get started?

Well there’s two things to consider here:

  1. What to blog about
  2. How to publish your blog

What do you want to blog about?

The other day I was playing golf with my friend Pete. He asked me what I was up to and I told him about how I was blogging. He told me had thought about it too.

I said “So you want to blog. What do you want to blog about?”

Pete is an older guy with an absolute wealth of knowledge about relationships and family. He is a father of 2 married kids, has a great wife and possesses an abundance of wisdom when it comes to raising a family and keeping your marriage strong. I’ve often sought his counsel about help with my family.
He also likes his golf, but he’s about as good as me. Enough said.
What should he blog about?

My advice to Pete is to write about what he’s passionate about. I would personally love to read Pete’s views on raising kids. I’m sure he’s made made mistakes and would do things differently. If he was writing advice to the Pete of 30 years ago I’d love to read it today!

I also want to hear about how to keep my marriage sweet.

At this stage it doesn’t really matter who’s going to read the blog because in this case the idea is more for Pete to leave a bit of a legacy for his family and friends.

So the question remains, what do you want to blog about?

Start with something you know and love. You’d be amazed who else would benefit from your experience. In this internet age it’s so easy for peop

le with similar interests to be able to find each other. The hard part is to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Whatever you decide to write about, write from your heart and add value.

I think Pete has a book in him and I’d love to read his thoughts

What about you?
What is your passion? What would you love to do if money was not an issue?
That’s a great clue right there. Just start.

How to publish on the web.

Once you’ve created some content you need to make it accessible to the masses.
Now you have 2 options.

  1.  Set up an account on a blogging style website.
  2.  Create your own website

If you just want to get started and create some information about your favourite hobby or passion then you don’t need to go as far as settin

g up your own independent website. You can always do that down the track if you choose.

I’d recommend a couple of sites like hubpages.com or wordpress.com

These are sites you can simply log into and create your first blog. Follow the links to have a look for yourself.

If you do want to run your own site I’d recommend keeping it simple and again using a wordpress.org powered site. The details are beyond the scope of this article but the bottom line is if you have access to a computer and the internet then you can do it.

You just need to get started.
